Visual Product Designer

Job Summary

As a member of our UX/UI Team, the Visual Product Designer will be responsible for creating visually compelling and innovative experiences for our end users. You will partner with your design and research team members, as well as product managers and front-end developers to create accessible, delightful end-to-end experiences from concept to ship.    You are a great collaborator and communicator, possess a positive attitude, and enjoy working with other passionate teammates.  

Qualifications

  • 5+ years industry experience as a visual product designer or related discipline

  • Degree in Design (e.g. graphic design, visual communications, product design) or equivalent practical experience - must have a portfolio of work that demonstrates breadth, creativity and innovation

  • Strong understanding of the intersection between data visualization and modern interface design, plus how to apply those across multiple device mediums (responsive)

  • Bring a deep understanding of fundamental visual design disciplines (typography, iconography, composition, color, composition, layout, etc.) and a strong command of industry best practices in interaction design, usability and accessibility

  • Demonstrate extremely strong visual sensibilities, ability to use visual thinking, storyboards, sketching, and communication design to create breakthrough product experiences

  • Can clearly convey conceptual ideas and design rationale to peers, partners and stakeholders - as well as defend and build consensus around design direction

  • Willingness to collaborate and effectively communicate with Front End Development Engineers and Product Managers

  • Capable of balancing multiple priorities and deadlines - from start to finish

  • Has the ability to rapidly understand new products and requirements, adapt quickly to the changing needs of the business, and manage the ambiguity that can sometimes occur in a fast-paced environment.

  • Create and manage design and pattern libraries for large, complex projects

  • Comfortable giving and receiving critical design feedback

  • Proficient with industry standard design & prototyping tools (Sketch, Illustrator, Photoshop, Invision, Zeplin, or some other wireframing/prototyping tool that communicates your ideas well and provides the required assets to your partners.)

  • Understands how to gather user feedback on designs when required, but also has the ability to work quickly off of gut instinct, when necessary.

  • Experience working within an Agile/Scrum SDLC

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

 

Other Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Knowledge of Accessibility requirements (WCAG 2.0, A11Y)

  • Knowledge of Ember.js (or similar JavaScript) Frameworks

  • Knowledge and appreciation of the advances in higher educational software, course materials, and digital publishing is a plus

  • Background and/or experience in educational technology and/or publishing

  • Comfort and/or experience in a fast-paced, growing environment

  • Ideal candidate is self-sufficient and highly motivated, self-directed and possesses high energy and a passion for RedShelf
